Haudenosaunee cruises to 18-2 win over England behind Eli McLaughlin’s 4 goals and 4 assists at 2024 World Lacrosse Men’s Box Championship

ONEIDA INDIAN NATION – The Haudenosaunee Nationals bounced back with a huge 18-2 win over England in the final game of pool play at the 2024 World Lacrosse Men’s Box Championship. The Nationals were led by Eli McLaughlin’s four goals and four assists, Thomas Hoggarth’s three goals and an assist, Cody Jamieson’s two goals and three assists, and Lyle Thompson’s two goals and three assists. Tehoka Nanticoke also added two goals and Randy Staats one goal and three assists. Doug Jamieson and Warren Hill split time in the net for Haudenosaunee and finished with a combined 23 saves.

Haudenosaunee scored early as Tehoka Nanticoke drove the lane off the two man game to finish top right corner at 13:50 of the first. England responded on a Jack Royer goal from the top through traffic at 9:59. Cody Jamieson scored his first of the day dodging through traffic and finishing in the middle for the 2-1 Haudenosaunee lead at 7:43 if the first. And England penalty for holding the stick led to another Cody Jamieson goal as he back cut and finished a dime from Randy Staats for the power play goal at 4:07. Four minutes later Kason Tarbell scooped an unforced turnover and sprinted in transition to score on the breakaway for his lone goal of the day and the 4-1 lead headed to the second quarter.

Thomas Hoggarth scored his first of the day on a pick and pop with Zed Williams from the left side at 11:46 of the second. Nonkon Thompson followed 30-seconds later as he created a turnover in the defensive zone that was scooped by Lyle Thompson and fired back to Nonkon open on the doorstep for the 6-1 lead. England responded five minutes later on a two on none breakaway goal from Tom Roche to cut the lead to 6-2. That would be the last goal from England as Haudenosaunee ended the game on a 12-0 run. A slashing penalty on England led to an Eli McLaughlin power play goal as Staats skipped a pass through traffic to McLaughlin on the weakside for the 7-2 lead at 3:23 of the second. McLaughlin struck again two minutes later as Jamieson swung the ball to McLaughlin wide open on the doorstep for the 8-2 lead headed to halftime.

The third started with another England penalty and a power play goal from Randy Staats as he used the shot fake to create space and score top shelf to extend the lead to 9-2 at 10:56. Tehoka Nanticoke followed with his second of the game as Eli McLaughlin assisted on a bullet from the top by Nanticoke at 9:39. Thomas Hoggarth scored his second of the game 30-seconds later as Cody Jamieson found Hoggarth in the slot for the 11-2 lead. An England penalty for holding at 4:34 led to another power play goal for McLaughlin as he worked off the double screen to find space up top and score at 4:21 of the third. Lyle Thompson scored his first of the day from the deep left side on a swing pass from Jamieson at 2:03 of third to head to the fourth quarter with the 13-2 Haudenosaunee lead.

Two early penalties on England and Haudenosaunee made it 4-on-4 and Randy Staats floated a pass to Thomas Hoggarth near the crease who finished top right corner for the 14-2 lead at 13:47. The scoring stalled until Trey Deere took a pass from Hoggarth and went five hole for his first ever goal as a Haudenosaunee Nationals Box Lacrosse player at 6:33. Lyle Thompson followed unassisted at 6:08 to extend the lead to 16-2. Travis Longboat joined the scoring column as he took a pass from Eli McLaughlin and stepped inside for the 17-2 lead with 4:30 to play. McLaughlin scored his fourth goal of the night on a breakaway with 1:23 remaining to give the Haudenosaunee the 18-2 victory.
