Hoggarth, Marquis, McLaughlin, and Staats lead Haudenosaunee offense in 24-6 win over Israel in quarterfinals of 2024 World Lacrosse Men’s Box Championship; Will face USA in Semis

UTICA – The Haudenosaunee Nationals defeated Israel 24-6 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 World Lacrosse Men’s Box Championship at the Adirondack Bank Center. The Haudenosaunee offense got goals from 10 different players and points from 16 players total in route to the semifinal round. Thomas Hoggarth scored six goals and added two assists and Koleton Marquis, in his first official game ever with the Haudenosaunee Box program, scored six goals and added two assists to help lead the way. Eli McLaughlin and Randy Staats stayed in rhythm with two goals and 10 assists and three goals and four assists, respectively. Warren Hill backstopped the defense with 33 saves in net.

Haudenosaunee struck first a minute into the game on a legendary one handed backhand between the legs from Thomas Hoggarth as he took the rebound off the wall and scored five hole with his back to the goal to make it 1-0. A cross-checking penalty on Israel put Haudenosaunee a man-up and Randy Staats scored camping on the weakside on a skip pass across the crease from Eli McLaughlin at 12:06. Another Israel penalty, this time for slashing, led to an Eli McLaughlin power play goal as Staats returned the favor and found McLaughlin on the back post for the 3-0 lead at 8:32 in the first. Zed Williams followed with a patented spin move up top to create space and fire a low bouncer that found the back of the net at 8:07. Israel answered using the two man game as Jean-Luc Chetner found Brenden Lundy for the goal with 4:41 left in the quarter. An illegal body check from Nonkon Thompson put Haudenosaunee down a man but Randy Staats scored the shorty five hole at 2:31 on another assist from Eli McLaughlin to extend the lead to 5-1, which would carry to the second quarter.

A Kason Tarbell penalty for checking from behind at 13:23 led to an Israel power play goal to start the third as Chetner found Parker Pipher on the doorstep to cut the lead to 5-2 less than two minutes into the quarter. Tehoka Nanticoke responded with his first of the day as Trey Deere drove the lane and found Nanticoke behind the net for the dunk at 12:08. Koleton Marquis scored his first ever World Box Championship goal streaking off the bench for the low bouncer on a pass from Brooker Muir for the 7-2 lead at 10:29 of the second. Another Thomas Hoggarth goal came off the two man game with Randy Staats who dropped the behind the back pass to Hoggarth for the diving goal at 9:41. An illegal substitution penalty put Haudenosaunee a man down but a defensive stop and outlet from Adam Bomberry to Justin Martin led to the shorthanded breakaway goal from Martin, his first of the tournament, at 8:48 and the 9-2 lead. Israel responded at 6:17 as Parker Pipher took a pass in transition and scored to make it 9-3. Hoggarth scored his hat trick off the screen and roll with Tehoka Nanticoke who sent a shovel pass in traffic for Hoggarth to finish with the underhand goal at 4:22 for the final goal of the quarter.

Israel scored first in the third as Dan Applebaum scored five hole on a 2-on-1 breakaway at 11:37 to cut the lead to 10-4. Four minutes later Cody Jamieson found Randy Staats leaking open on the back door for the 11-4 lead. Israel answered as Nathaniel Solomon slipped open in the middle and scored a beautiful between the legs backhand to make it 11-5 at 6:15 of the third. Koleton Marquis scored his second of the game rolling to the net and taking a Randy Staats dime to score at 5:07. Trey Deere followed with a back cut and one-timer from Hoggarth at 4:45 for his lone goal of the game. Marquis secured the hat trick at 1:14 as he used the shot fake to get inside the defense and score to make it 14-5 headed to the final frame.

Nonkon Thompson scored his lone goal of the game after sending the opening draw into the offensive zone to be picked up by Lyle Thompson, who sent it back to a streaking Nonkon wide open in front for the 15-5 lead nine seconds into the quarter. Hoggarth then went on a 3-0 run by himself started by a step down that trickled over the line from the left side at 14:30. Hoggarth then hit the pipe to create a long outlet by Israel that was broken up by Kason Tarbell. Tarbell pushed the ball ahead to Hoggarth streaking behind the defense who scored to the right side of the net for his fifth goal of the game at 12:10. Hoggarth then slipped open in the middle and took a feed from Randy Staats for the 18-5 lead at 10:24. Koleton Marquis then went back-to-back 30-seconds apart streaking off the bench both times and burying his fourth and fifth goals of the game to make it 20-5 with 9:43 to play. Israel stopped the 9-0 Haudenosaunee run as Nathaniel Solomon sniped one from the top for his second of the game. Trey Deere then found Eli McLaughlin for his second of the game as he used the stutter step to create space and score at 6:08. Marquis secured the sock trick as he slipped the back screen and popped open for another Randy Staats assist to make it 22-6 with 3:57 to play. Brooker Muir rounded out the scoring for his first two goals of the tournament as he scored a bouncer in front of the net at 3:27. Muir followed at 43-seconds left with a deep strike from way beyond the restraining line as the shot clock ran down to make the final score 24-6 and move the Haudenosaunee to the semifinals.

Up Next: Haudenosaunee will face USA in the semifinals on Friday, September 27 at 7 p.m. EST at the Adirondack Bank Center. The game will be a rematch of the opening game of pool play which USA won 16-9.
