Hat Tricks from Blackbird, Burns, John, and Tarbell lead Haudenosaunee to 19-4 win over the Netherlands on the Oneida Indian Nation; Defense dominant again

ONEIDA INDIAN NATION – The Haudenosaunee Nationals used a big third quarter to run away from the Netherlands 19-4 in the final game of pool play at the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s Box Championship. The Haudenosaunee offense got goals from nine different players, including hat tricks from four players. Trysten Burns finished with three goals and four assists, Lindsay John three goals and two assists, Ferrah Blackbird three goals and one assist, and Tallis Tarbell with three goals. The defense connitnued their dominance only giving up four goals, backstopped by goalie Chelsea Gibson with 21 saves. The game was played at the Mary C. Winder Community Center on the Oneida Indian Nation, a monumental moment in bringing Haudenosaunee world championship lacrosse out to Indian Country.

The Haudenosaunee opened the game on a Tallis Tarbell goal from the middle 20-seconds into the contest on an assist from Carey-Leigh Vyse. The Netherlands responded 30-seconds as Bellamie Persad scored working off the two woman game to tie it at 1-1. The game was a stalemate until Trysten Burns snuck one home five hole working off the screen and assist from Joni Squire-Hill to regain the lead at 8:29. Lindsey John followed as she pump faked and drove to the net for her first goal of the game at 7:05 of the first. Trysten Burns scored again 20-seconds later as she took a pass from Joni Squire-Hill and buried a shot from the top to extend the lead to 4-1. Ferrah Blackbird drive the lane and hit the post but Carey-Leigh Vyse corralled the rebound and scored her first of the game at 5:05. The Netherlands answered on a goal by Ryley Black to cut the lead to 5-2 headed to the second quarter.

The second started with Haudenosaunee down a woman on a Trysten Burns slashing call. The Nationals killed the power play but an unforced turnover led to a runout and breakaway goal from Eva Klaassen to pull the Netherlands within 5-3 at 12:00 of the second quarter. An illegal cross checking penalty on the Netherlands led to power play goal by Mackenzie Shigwadja, her first of the game. Another cross checking penalty followed and Kendall Tabobandung finished low on a pass from Kenley Jacobs for the 7-3 lead at 6:59. The Netherlands killed a third cross checking penalty before Ferrah Blackbird dug a ball out of the corner and drove to the net finishing five hole off a spin move to make it 8-3 with 35-seconds remaining in the first half.

The third quarter started with a 5-minute major for boarding on the Netherlands followed by a tripping to put Haudenosaunee at a 5-on-3 advantage. Lindsay John buried a power play goal on the doorstep off an assist from Mackenzie Shigwadja to make it 9-3 at 13:43 of the third. A Haudenosaunee cross checking penalty on Kenley Jacobs put the game at 4-on-4 and Ferrah Blackbird used a Shigwadja screen to drive right and score a diving goal across the crease at 12:40. Carey-Leigh Vyse scored her second goal of the game on a screen and roll with Trysten Burns to extend the lead to 11-3 with 12 minutes to play. An unnecessary roughness penalty on the Netherlands led to another Haudenosaunee power play goal as Trysten Burns fired a pass through traffic to Mackenzie Shigwadja for her second of the game at 8:15 in the third. Three minutes later Tallis Tarbell cut middle and scored low for her second of the game and the 13-3 lead. The Netherlands responded on a steal and breakway goal from Delaney Keen at 4:03. A minute later Mekwan Tulpin took a pass in transition and drove baseline and scored for her first of the game. Lindsay John from the middle scored 30-seconds later on an assist by Kenley Jacobs to grow the Haudenosaunee lead to 15-4. Tallis Tarbell scored her hat trick from the left side at 2:13. A 4 minute penalty and game misconduct on the Netherlands led to two more power play goals for Haudenosaunee. Trysten Burns sniped one at 1:35 and Ferrah Blackbird followed on a low shot from the top to make the score 18-4 headed to the fourth quarter. Haudenosaunee outscored the Netherlands 10-1 in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter continued to be a battle but had little scoring, a sharp contrast to the third. Joni Squire-Hill scored the lone goal of the quarter on the power play as she was camping wide open on the weakside and buried a pass from Mackenzie Shigwadja to make it 19-4 with seven minutes to play in the game.
