Haudenosaunee Men win Bronze in 14-5 win over England at 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championship

UTICA – The Haudenosaunee Nationals defeated England 14-5 to win the Bronze Medal at the 2024 World Lacrosse Men’s Box Championship at the Adirondack Bank Center. The Haudenosaunee was led by Lyle Thompson with a hat trick and an assist. Tehoka Nanticoke, Randy Staats, and Travis Longboat each added two goals and three assists. Larson Sundown and Thomas Hoggarth added two goals apiece. Warren Hill took the start in net and finished with 35 saves to help stave off a somewhat sluggish start by the offense in the first half.

Haudenosaunee jumped out early as a defensive stop led to a Randy Staats left corner snipe 25-seconds into the game. The Nationals looked a little sluggish after that until Thomas Hoggarth made it 2-0 at 4:26 on a pass from Tehoka Nanticoke. Larson Sundown followed up from the weak side as he took a pass from Staats and scored to make it 3-0 with 3:59 to play in the first.

England responded in the second as Ben Buchanan snatched the rebound and scored to make it 3-1 at 14:24. The teams exchanged penalty over the next several minutes before a Brendan Bomberry slashing penalty led to a power play goal for England’s Corey Small at 5:42. A Jeremy Thompson holding penalty at 1:39 put Haudenosaunee a man down. But, Trey Deere would push the ball ahead to Travis Longboat for his first goal of the game, shorthanded at 1:04 and the 4-2 lead headed to halftime.

The Haudenosaunee would use a 6-1 run in the third quarter to create some separation. Lyle Thompson got things started with a swim move to the outside and a jump shot over the shoulder of the goalie for the 5-2 lead at 13:19. Brendan Bomberry followed with a breakaway goal at 10:53. England would answer four minutes later as Corey Small went five hole to cut the lead to 6-3 at 6:54 of the third. Randy Staats then found Thomas Hoggarth cutting in traffic to make it 7-3 at 5:41. Staats followed with a goal of his own from the left side on a step down to the far corner at 4:16. Larson Sundown scored his second of the day behind a Cody Jamieson screen to make it 9-3 at 2:56. Jamieson then found Tehoka Nanticoke on the doorstep 90-seconds later for the 10-3 lead headed to the fourth quarter.

England scored 50-seconds into the final quarter as Jack Royer took a pass from Corey Small to cut the lead to 10-4. Travis Longboat responded with his second of the night from the top at 12:14. Lyle Thompson then scored back-to-back goals for his hat trick. The first on a dunk from behind the net off a Thomas Hoggarth path at 11:40. Lyle then took a breakaway and finished the twister diving to the left side for the 13-4 lead at 10:05. Trey Deere followed with a dunk of his own at 3:52 to make it 14-4. England would answer at 3:18 on a goal by Tom Roper to make it 14-5. Haudenosaunee would hold on to secure the Bronze Medal.
