UTICA – The Haudenosaunee Nationals fell behind early but battled back before falling to Canada 13-10 in their second game of pool play at the 2024 World Lacrosse Men’s Box Championship at the Adirondack Bank Center. Canada jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Haudenosaunee responded with a 7-0 run of their own to claw back. The Haudenosaunee offense was led by two goals and three assist from Randy Staats, three goals and an assist from Thomas Hoggarth, and two goals and an assist from Tehoka Nanticoke. Goalie Doug Jamieson got the start and finished with 22 saves.

Haudenosaunee talked about staying out of the penalty box but Kason Tarbell found himself there 31-seconds into the game as he got called for a cross check in the corner on Josh Byrne. Canada’s Tanner Cook made them pay as he sat on the backside of the crease and buried a skip pass from Dhane Smith at 13:51 of the opening quarter. Welsey Berg followed 30-seconds later on a step down from the left side off a Jeff Teat pass to make it 2-0 Canada early. After the goal, Zed Williams was called for a dead ball contact penalty for a check but Haudenosaunee successfully killed the Canada power play. Ryan Smith scored his first of the game for Canada off the two man game as he took a pass from Berg and buried one from the left side. Twenty seconds later Dhane Smith bounced one five hole for the 4-0 lead. Ryan Smith scored his second goal after a groundball scramble as he split the defense and drove to the net to score unassisted at 2:59 of the first. A minute later Smith secured his hat trick as he cut open and took a pass from Cook to finish on the doorstep and extend the lead to 6-0 for Canada. Wesley Berg ended the first slipping to the middle and taking a pass from Jeff Teat to make the score 7-0 headed to the second quarter.

Teat then scored himself to start the second as he buried a pass from Tanner Cook 15-seconds into the quarter. Another Canada goal came as Robert Church slipped open on another assist from Jeff Teat to make it 9-0 at 9:10 of the second quarter. That sparked a goalie change for Haudenosaunee as Warren Hill entered for the Nationals. A 5-minute major on Zach Williams for elbowing put Haudenosaunee a man down but in a somewhat ironic turn of events it sparked the offense as they got two shorthanded goals to start clawing back and end the half on a 4-0 run. The first saw Kason Tarbell streaking on a long pass from Brendan Bomberry and Tarbell finished shorthanded at 7:36. A minute later Lyle Thompson put a shot on net and Thomas Hoggarth scooped the rebound in traffic and finished low to make it 9-2. Tehoka Nanticoke scored his first of the game as he split the defense on the wing and buried the ball in the left side of the net at 3:14. A Canada penalty for holding the stick put Haudenosaunee a man up and Larson Sundown kept the ball alive along the boards to find Hoggarth in the middle again who went five hole to cut the lead to 9-4 with 4-seconds left in the half.

Nanticoke scored his second of the day on a skip pass from Eli McLaughlin as he used several fakeson the doorstep before scoring at 5:28. Canada ended the 7-0 Haudenosaunee run as Wesley Berg found Robert Church in front to extend the lead to 10-7. Eli McLaughlin answered with  a bouncer off a screen from Randy Staats at 4:42. Another Canada penalty for holding the stick led to a Randy Staats power play goal as he snuck one home from the left side to close the deficit to 10-9 headed to the final frame.

The fourth opened with a defensive stop and Zed Williams taking the ball coast to coast using his patented post up spin move to create space and score to tie the game at 10-10 20-seconds into the fourth. Canada responded as Tanner Cook went five hole to regain the lead at 13:55. The teams exchanged a few penalties for the remainder of the quarter but Haudenosaunee could not take advantage and eventually an unforced turnover turned into a breakaway goal for Canada’s Mitch de Snoo to make it 12-10 with 1:57 to play. Haudenosaunee pulled the goalie for an extra attacker but a Hoggarth shot off the boards led to a run out and empty netter from Matt Gilray to seal the 13-10 victory for Canada.

Up Next: The loss drops Haudenosaunee to 0-2 on the tournament. Haudenosaunee gets the day off and will return to play England at 4:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, September 24. The game will be played on the Oneida Nation at the brand new Mary C. Winder Community Center.
